Modern web formats: from the first GIF to AVIF

Explore how GIF, WebM, WebP and AVIF were created, how each one represents motion, and where each format fits in a modern creative workflow.

Four ideas for the web

Web motion does not belong to a single format. GIF grew from the early online exchange of color images. WebM brought an open video container to HTML5. WebP turned video-compression ideas into a flexible image format, and AVIF carried AV1 coding into detailed still images and image sequences. Together, they cover everything from a tiny repeating reaction to polished motion with transparency, high frame rates or audio.

A short history

How web formats evolved

Each format began with a different problem to solve. Their history explains why they behave differently today—and why all four can still have a useful place in the same delivery toolkit.

CompuServe introduced the Graphics Interchange Format for efficient exchange of color images across online services. The 1989 GIF89a revision added graphic-control features such as frame delay and disposal behavior, helping timed multi-image sequences become a familiar form of web animation.

The WebM Project announced an open, freely implementable media format designed for the web. Its focused, Matroska-based container initially paired VP8 video with Vorbis audio; the format later welcomed VP9 video and Opus audio.

Google released a developer preview of WebP, applying VP8 intra-frame coding to still images inside a lightweight RIFF-based container. The format soon expanded with lossless compression, transparency and animation, turning it into a versatile image-delivery option.

The Alliance for Open Media published version 1.0 of the AV1 Image File Format. AVIF stores AV1-coded images and image sequences in a HEIF-based structure, bringing modern compression, high bit depth, wide color, HDR and alpha support to a web image format.

Inside the formats

Four ways to store and deliver motion

The file extension is only the surface. Underneath, each format organizes frames, timing, color and optional sound in its own way.

GIFPalette-based frames

GIF stores a sequence of indexed-color images with timing and frame-disposal instructions. That compact, self-contained model made the format a lasting language for short reactions, simple diagrams and instantly recognizable loops.

WebMVideo container

WebM carries a compressed video stream with precise timing and can also include audio. VP9 is especially useful for browser video, longer motion, high frame rates and transparency-aware delivery in supported workflows.

WebPFlexible image container

WebP can combine lossy or lossless frames, alpha transparency and animation metadata in one image file. It fits interface motion, stickers, product previews and other silent loops that should behave like web images.

AVIFAV1 image sequences

AVIF uses AV1 coding inside a HEIF-based image structure. It is designed for detailed stills and polished silent sequences, with support for alpha, high bit depth, wide color gamut and HDR-oriented workflows.
